A letter for Sobia

Remarks shared at Sobia's funeral, August 2026

First, I want to thank everyone for being here today, and for all of the love, prayers, and support that you have shown Sobia, our son, me, and our families. It means more to us than I can possibly express.

There are so many things I could say about Sobia.

Anyone who knew her knew how incredibly intelligent, driven, and accomplished she was. She worked unbelievably hard for everything she achieved. She became a physician and built a career that she could be incredibly proud of. But as impressive as all of those accomplishments were, they don't begin to describe who Sobia really was.

To me, she was my wife, my best friend, my partner, and the person I expected to spend the rest of my life with.

We built a life together. We had plans for our future. We laughed together, argued about stupid things, traveled together, made decisions together, and went through some of the happiest and hardest moments of our lives side by side. There are a thousand ordinary things about our life together that I would give anything to experience with her one more time.

And more than almost anything, Sobia wanted to be a mother.

Those closest to us know how much that meant to her and how much we went through together to get here. She loved our son before he ever entered this world. She carried him, protected him, worried about him, planned for him, and dreamed about the life we would have with him.

It breaks my heart beyond words that she will not get to hold him and watch him grow.

But I want everyone here to know that he will know his mother.

He will know how beautiful she was. He will know how intelligent and accomplished she was. He will know her personality, her stories, the things that made her laugh, and probably the things she would have yelled at him — and me — about.

Most importantly, he will know how deeply she loved him and how badly she wanted him.

I will spend the rest of my life making sure that he knows that.

Sobia gave me so much during our life together, but the last thing she gave me was our son. I will love him enough for both of us, and I will do everything I can to raise him in a way that would make his mother proud.

Sobia, I don't know how I'm supposed to do this without you. I don't know how to say goodbye to the person I was supposed to grow old with.

So I'm not going to say goodbye.

I will carry you with me. I will see you in our son. I will tell him about you. I will make sure your name is spoken in our home and that your memory remains a part of his life and mine.

I love you, Sobia. I always will.

May Allah forgive you, have mercy upon you, grant you the highest place in Jannah, and reunite us one day.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un.

If you knew Sobia, we invite you to share your own memory or contribute photos and videos.
